Meeting with the recycling guru. And Bugetti (Pd) presents a motion

Prato, 6 November 2018 – A special parterre at the conference on textile waste and circular economy organized by Astri (Italian Association for recycled textiles) in the Banti hall in Montemurlo. Politicians, entrepreneurs, representatives of Confindustria and trade associations to show how the issue of the management of textile waste is a hot front to be solved now once and for all. It is early. The meeting – the honors of the house were made by the mayor Mauro Lorenzini – was hosted by the American scholar Paul Connett, who first theorized the Zero Waste strategy. However, the regional councilor for the environment Federica Fratoni, held in Florence for urgent reasons, has failed.

“I am available to return to Prato to hold public meetings on the subject”, said the commissioner Fratoni by voice of Ilaria Bugetti, regional councilor Pd, who in the meantime presented a motion on the reuse of textile waste, proposing Prato as a place of experimentation with «innovative measures to simplify the qualification of the pre and post-consumer by-product». An opportunity to take stock of the match of textile waste to be considered not waste, but in its potential to be transformed into secondary raw materials to be re-introduced into the market. «Waiting for November 21st, when we will find ourselves once again in the Region – the mayor Matteo Biffoni and the Councilor Benedetta Squittieri explain – we are working taking into account the European directives awaiting a response from the Government to what the Region suggests Tuscany. The first piece to be defined is that of the characterization of the textile waste. The hypothesis of the Cassero landfill has returned: textile waste can only be accepted if it is characterized. Which means that you have to know what kind of materials the waste is made of. A step that big companies can afford, but it is more difficult for small and medium-sized businesses like those in our district “.

How to overcome this obstacle? “There are two ways to move on. Establish at the regional level the guidelines on the circular economy for textiles and write a pact with the district of Prato where everyone takes their responsibilities ». An approach that also looks at new markets in which to enter secondary raw materials. As you look to the future, the lesson of the enthusiastic Connett, presented by the president of Astri, Fabrizio Tesi. “Here in Prato I found that the factory provides a good example to the civil community in knowing how to recycle waste products – says Connett – Sometimes you have to look back to progress”.
